What are Carrier Oils?

HoPE Carrier Oils

Carrier oils play a large role in aromatherapy. A lot of people often interchange carrier oils and essential oils. Even some companies make that mistake. One time my sister told me there is green tea essential oil. When I checked, it was Camellia seed oil which is a carrier oil.
So what are carrier oils?
Carrier oils come from nuts, kernels, or seeds. They are used for diluting essential oils to allow optimum skin absorption. Carrier oils also enable equal amount of essential oil to be spread over the whole body or a body part. Example of carrier oils are Argan Oil and Rosehip Oil.

Carrier oils usually contain essential fatty acids and some vitamins and minerals. It is important that carrier oils do not undergo unnecessary processing. Over processing strips out essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, losing its therapeutic properties. There are so many oils in the market that are over processed - like bleaching to remove color and deodorizing to remove smell.

Different carrier oils have different therapeutic properties, have a look at some of the most common carrier oils used today.
Argan oil is often referred to as being  liquid gold. It is an organic product extracted from the argan kernels. It is native to Morocco and it is incredibly rich in nutrients and fatty acids. It is also full of vitamin E and is very beneficial to the hair and the skin. This makes it popular skin care staple for those who want to hydrate and soften their skin.

Argan oil can be used pure in face or body oils. It can also be used as a carrier oil blend. It is suitable for all skin types. Argan oil is useful for dry and flaky skin. It helps improve skin elasticity and in healing sun damaged skin. It is also great for hair care. Argan oil is used widely for beauty purposes, and we also call it beauty oil.
Rosehip oil is extracted from rosehip seeds. It is rich in fatty acids including linoleic acid and omega-3. It naturally contains Vitamins A, C, and E (thanks Mother Nature!). Rosehip oil also helps to speed up skin healing, apply it to cracked skin to nourish and rehydrate it in no time.

Rosehip oil can be used pure in face or body oils. It can also be used as a carrier oil blend. It’s a great anti-oxidant, helping to regenerate and restructure tissues and cells. Rosehip oil is suitable for all skin types, especially mature skin, prematurely aged skin, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. Rosehip oil is used widely for beauty purposes, and we also call it beauty oil.
Olive Oil
Although olive oil is a kitchen staple, the olive oil used in aromatherapy is cold-pressed and extra virgin. It can be included in a carrier oil blend up to 50%. Olive oil is suitable for all skin types, including mature and dry skin. It’s useful for skin dryness and itching.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is cold pressed from the meat of mature coconuts. Commonly found in tropical countries and islands like the Philippines, Thailand, and Fiji. Coconut oil’s use for both beauty, health and as food ingredient has surged in the last few years. It contains lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid. It can be used pure in body oils or be used in carrier oil blends. Coconut oil is useful for skin irritation, soothing sun-burnt skin, and softening and smoothing skin.
